Hi, I'm Dave.
A lot of creatives take a direct path to becoming a designer.
I didn’t.
I took the scenic route. I double majored in Philosophy and Communication Studies where I strengthened my ability to understand and interpret complex and abstract information. I learned formal logic, critical thinking, how to come up with multiple solutions to challenges and how the little details relate to the big picture. More importantly I learned the value of these skills in everyday life.
When I finished, I worked in sales where I learned how to work hard. Really hard. Every day I interacted with people from all walks of life and built relationships. I learned how to listen and how to understand the importance of each person’s journey. I learned how to succeed in a fast-paced, high-pressure, deadline-driven environment where priorities, goals and guidelines constantly changed. I was good at it. But I wanted something different, so I figured out what it was and went after it.
I decided to go back to school to earn my BFA in Graphic Design.
This wasn’t starting over, I was able to transfer my skills and build on my experience and everything I had already learned. I solve problems by understanding the user’s journey and experience, and then bring unique design solutions to life. I embrace the challenge of pushing design forward and evolving direction while staying true to brand standards. I love the creative process and collaborating. I know how to keep multiple projects moving—from the creative brief to the final handoff.
I make cool-looking stuff, but it’s always based on the underlying tactics, the big picture strategy and an appreciation of the user journey that I’ve learned along the way.
